During chilly seasons, the last thing you want to do is to sit on an ice-cold toilet seat. But the days of toughing it out are over. For warmer, more comfortable trips to the bathroom, consider getting a heated toilet seat.

A heated toilet seat has internal components that safely warm up when you turn it on. This makes bathroom trips more comfortable, especially if you’re sensitive to the cold or live in an area with harsher winters. It can come with heating as its primary feature—or extra comforts like a bidet, nightlight, and more.

Are heated toilet seats safe?

Heated toilet seats are safe if used properly. For starters, remember to adjust the seat’s temperature to a comfortable level for you.

Because heated toilet seats are powered by electricity, plugging them into a GFCI outlet is essential. These safety outlets are designed specially for areas that may come in contact with water—like bathrooms and kitchens—and help reduce the risk of shock.

Lastly, just like any appliance or electronic device, consult the user manual to read over any warnings and important instructions for your heated toilet seat.

Are heated toilet seats easy to install?

If you have an electronic bidet with a heating function, the installation gets more complicated—though not by much. These types require a few extra steps to supply the bidet with water through the toilet’s main water line. If you’re not an expert on DIY projects, don't worry—the process is easy enough for anyone to do, and your toilet seat will include all of the parts you need.

Lastly, before purchasing, be sure to check the shape of your toilet bowl. Most toilets fall under two general sizes: round and elongated. To determine your toilet's shape, measure from the center of the bolt holes to the front of your toilet bowl. In general, round toilets will measure 16.5 inches, while elongated toilets will measure 18.5 inches.

What other features does a heated toilet seat have?

Many heated toilet seats come with extra features, like an LED nightlight for evening bathroom trips, and a gentle-close seat and lid that prevents slamming.

Heated seats are a welcome luxury in chilly weather—and many offer a built-in bidet feature as well. More comfortable and hygienic than toilet paper, a bidet allows the user to wash with water after using the bathroom. A heated toilet seat with a bidet may also include additional features, like a deodorizer, a warm air dryer, and more.

Are heated toilet seats worth it?

If you value warm, comfortable trips to the bathroom, heated toilet seats are worth it—especially if you live in an area with harsh winters. They’re safe, easy to install and control, so the temperature is just right for you.

A heated toilet seat with a bidet is a great option too if you’re looking for more features. Whatever you choose, you won't ever have to worry about a cold toilet seat again.
